Clivus Multrum, Inc. designs, manufactures, and sells composting toilets and greywater irrigation systems with the aim of conserving water and keeping nutrients in human waste from becoming a source of pollution. For more than 30 years, Clivus has provided environmentally sound waste treatment solutions to customers in North America and beyond.

Our systems come in a full range of sizes and can accommodate virtually any circumstance. Clivus clients include government, commercial, institutional, and residential customers. We regularly assist clients with design, installation, and maintenance of our systems. All Clivus systems are NSF and ADA approved.

Our History

The original Clivus Multrum composter was developed in 1939 by Rikard Lindstrom, a Swedish engineer. The name Clivus Multrum means “sloping chamber” in Swedish and describes the Clivus system design. The original Clivus used a single-chamber, sloped-bottom design and was constructed of concrete. Eventually, in 1962, the Clivus Multrum system was patented, and in 1964 the first commercial model was constructed out of fiberglass. In 1973, Clivus Multrum, Inc. was founded in Massachusetts under a license from Lindstrom. Clivus Multrum initially marketed its composting toilet and greywater irrigation systems to homeowners. Since then, the market for these technologies has greatly broadened.

The distinct “sloping chamber” remains a design feature of Clivus composters. Together with the custom-designed Clivus greywater system, these technologies represent a complete on-site system for capturing and recycling nutrients, rather than allowing them to create pollution.

Today, Clivus Multrum composting toilets and greywater systems are used in homes, public and private recreational areas, offices, retail stores, and more.
